For Vets and Farriers: I have Tested a Fantastic New Tool EponaTech Metron: Software for Hoof Conformation by Bernard Duvernay |
Very recently a new tool for the farrier and the veterinarian was introduced: it is a software system called Metron, from a company called EponaTech. Metron was specifically developed as an aid for farriers and vets to analyze the limb and feet angles. In particular, it is used in conjunction with photographs and/or radiographs of the equine foot. The most basic way to understand the software system is that it is a measuring and communication tool. It allows accurate measurements of lengths and angles in both photographs and radiographs, and gives a way to show these measurements overlaid on the original image so they are easy to understand. |

Limb Conformation Correction in Foals by Bernard Duvernay |
This brief collection of notes have resulted from an analysis based on my activities as a farrier and more particularly as a consultant in thoroughbred stud farms. The comments and advice result from the experience that I have gained in analysing limb conformation and my corrective work on young foals together with their monitoring throughout their racehorse career. (1)
This experience also encapsulates a lot of co-operative work between breeders, vets and farriers with whom I share the responsibility of assessing, correcting and maintaining, as far as possible, limb conformation in the foals and horses that we are entrusted with. This knowledge of limb conformation correction in foals is based on a large number of cases and this is certainly most assessable via the thoroughbred circuit. The speed at which thoroughbred foals grow, the economic stakes and the professionalism that is present in the major stud farms allows us to monitor things very closely, act with precision and at the right time, to deal with all growth anomalies in young foals’ limbs.
Nowadays,Glue-on plastic shoes allow us to take action without any major risks for the tiny hooves and mean that we have to become experts in a technology that is not a symbol of farriery.

Corrective shoeing for navicular disease: a world view by Bernard Duvernay |
For a long time, horse owners, veterinarians and farriers, have been confronted with this difficult problem: treating, monitoring and helping so called navicular horses. Today the term has become taboo because it represents repeated lameness and it is often a major handicap for the subject's sports career. The term podotrochlear syndrome has replaced it, but this troubles people's minds and quickly ends any discussion because it is not yet part of the horseman's vocabulary or jargon. |
